Some say the adult entertainment industry ensured the success of Blu-ray over HD DVD because it adopted the Blu-ray standard early-on. Maybe it can do the same for Apple’s AirPlay wireless technology that allows users to stream and receive audio and video content from their iPhone, iPod or iPad or to their TV set via an Apple TV.
The adult entertainment company Digital Playground says its new movies, trailers, membership sites and live chats with its stars now fully support Apple’s AirPlay.
Digital Playground CEO Samantha Lewis said, “Someone can buy one of our movies and instead of just watching it on their iPhone, iPad or laptop, they can now enjoy it from the comfort of their couch. Even our live video chats with our contract stars can be streamed live onto the TV screen!”
Ali Joone, Digital Playground’s founder, said, “We want to create the best content, and have it available in every way possible.”
While the iPad is playing the content on another device, it can smultaneously be used for other apps.
AirPlay has started appearing in other CE gear than Apple’s but so far not in any TV sets or PCs except for Macs. You have to have an Apple TV to watch on a TV set.
AirPlay currently only works with surround sound receivers and speaker systems. BridgeCo has a license to make and sell AirPlay chips that can be embedded in consumer electronics equipment to receive AirPlay streams. However, so far only a few such as Pioneer, Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, JBL and iHome have announced support for it. No TV or PC maker other than Apple has said it will embed AirPlay technology.
Founded in 1993, Digital Playground says it has more than 80% of HD sales in the adult market and is a leading provider of Blu-ray titles. It said it’s the most highly demanded supplier of content for hotel, IPTV, cable, pay-per-view and mobile networks worldwide. It shoots entirely in digital, completely bypassing the development labs.
There has been talk that OTT technology offers independent content producers a path directly to consumers’ TV sets. Joone said, “Hollywood has been a stifling arena, and we’re in a unique position in that we can make movies Hollywood won’t touch.” The company has not announced any OTT ambitions, but we expect they will.
Adult entertainment is a big business. An executive of a major cable TV company once told us that it is far and away the major revenue producer of pay-per-view offerings.
