Telstra to Use Comcast’s thePlatform

The Australian telco Telstra has selected Comcast’s thePlatform to provide the video management services for its BigPond TV service. It’ll deliver videos to T-Box set-top boxes, connected televisions and Blu-ray players from Samsung and LG plus the company’s BigPond Web online service.

Telstra is the first to use thePlatform to deliver services directly to television screens. It has about 120,000 of its T-Box brand DVRs installed. There is no broadband usage charge to the subscriber.

Telstra said that starting in May it will offer thirty Foxtel channels to T-Boxes plus movies and catch up TV.

The iPlatform CEO Ian Blaine said consumers have a higher expectation for reliability and quality when they view video on a TV rather than a PC. He said, “Service providers are looking for a more efficient means to manage and deliver premium video content across any screen.”

Telstra is using Google’s Widevine’s adaptive streaming technology to deliver television quality services over broadband.

Other iPlatform customers are cablecos such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox and Cablevision.
