Quantenna Communications, which makes HD video-capable Wi-Fi chips, has landed another major equipment maker. This time it’s France’s Sagemcom, which will use Quantenna’s chips in video bridges and other unnamed Wi-Fi capable products that offer wireless video and TV services.
The company said its high performance 802.11n 4x4 MIMO solutions will enable Sagemcom gear to stream HDTV and other video content to multiple wireless devices in the home, such as tablets and smartphones. Its implementation of Wi-Fi, it said, provides “rock-solid whole home wireless coverage” and simplifies installations.
Sagemcom said it will be able deploy wireless services in almost any size home, even through multiple concrete walls and floors, to multiple devices simultaneously and reliably.
Ahmed Selmani, deputy CEO of Sagemcom Broadband, said the combination of Quantenna and Sagemcom technology will enable Sagecom to rapidly deploy advanced video services.
Lionel Bonnot, VP of sales and business development at California-based Quantenna said its Wi-Fi 802.11n technology “accelerates the deployment of the next generation TV entertainment experience.”
He said Quantenna’s full-11n chipsets use the company’s cost-optimized, third-generation 4x4 MIMO technology to deliver up to 600 Mbps of bandwidth. Quantenna guarantees service providers all the coverage they require from 60 Mbps to 150 Mbps, at near-zero packet error rate. No other Wi-Fi chips, the company says, can meet those requirements because they do not deploy the full MIMO implementation, but instead rely on different portions of the broad 11n spec. Quantenna uses dynamic digital beam forming, mesh networking and channel monitoring and optimization to achieve its rates.
Quantenna recently signed a deal with Samsung Electronics to jointly develop “advanced” Wi-Fi-based solutions. They did not say what the products would be other than it would be consumer electronics. One person with some knowledge of the deal said it may be for Wi-Fi repeaters.
Quantenna’s investors include Grazia Equity, Sequoia Capital, Sigma Partners, Southern Cross Venture Partners and Venrock Associates.
Sagemcom, which has 6,000 employees, makes broadband gear, digital set-top boxes, broadband and residential terminals, telecom equipment, M2M products and printing terminals plus develops the associated software.
