HTC Rumored to Have 1m Preorders for 7-inch Flyer Tablet

- ‘Magic Pen’ Can Draw, Paint, Write, Retouch, Highlight
Taiwan’s HTC is joining the tablet war with its Android-based 7-inch HTC Flyer. It’s rumored to have pre-orders for one million, probably from cellcos who saw it at Mobile World Congress last month.

It uses Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor. HTC covers up Android with its Sense user interface. The OS is the older Gingerbread version, but HTC is expected to upgrade to the new Honeycomb platform after the product launch.

It has a ”magic pen” that can draw, paint, write, retouch pictures and highlight. All the highlights will be automatically collated. It can also link audio to the notes and be used to add voiceover to a storybook.

The unit has the OnLive cloud gaming app and the HTC Watch app for movie streaming and downloading.
There are two cameras: a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing digital camera. There’s also Flash support, GPS, an ambient light sensor, g-sensor and digital compass.

It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and runs on CDMA cellular networks like Sprint’s 3G network.

It weighs only about two-thirds of the iPad.

It is expected to be available worldwide in the second quarter of 2011. It’ll be primarily sold through cellcos. The company makes cell phones for many cellcos, so it has good contacts in that market.

The retail price is rumored to be $600.

The question is whether it can get any notice in the glaring light that’s coming from the iPad. A lot will depend on the price that cellcos offer it for as part of a bundle with cellular service.
