SMART TV (And Adapters That Make Dumb Ones Smart): Philips Launches Smart TVs & Speakers with AirPlay

From The Online Reporter

Philips is one of the many companies that are now offering smart TVs with Internet connectivity and surround sound speakers with Apple AirPlay for audio.

The Philips Cinema 21:9 Gold series Smart LED TVs allows users to connect to online content plus stream music, photos and videos from a tablet, smart phone or laptop as well as store TV programs and movies on-demand.

Users can browse the Web and use Facebook or Twitter at the same time.

The sets also have Philips’ Net TV Wi-Fi to access video stores and on-demand TV shows. The company did not say whose widgets it was using or whether it developed them. Philips has a long history of working with Sony, which has announced Google TV sets and Blu-ray players.

The sets can store on-demand shows on an optional USB-connected external hard drive.

Other features include:
- The first Philips TVs to include Easy 3D.
- Real-time 2D to 3D conversion so an entire movie collection, such as old black-and-white classics, can seamlessly play.
- Simultaneous multi-window viewing.

Philips also introduced Blu-ray players, many of which include the Smart TV functionality that’s in the new TV sets.

Audio and Video

Philips said it has combined its SoundSphere audio technology and its Fidelio docking speaker to bring music lovers “the ultimate High-Fidelity listening experience.”

The unit has both Wi-Fi and Apple’s AirPlay
With AirPlay, users can listen to music without the device ever needing to leave their hand. The Apple device will recognize the speakers if they are in range.
