Spotify Reaches 1m Paying Subscribers

Spotify has converted 15% of its users to its premium offering, meaning more than one million consumers are paying for the streaming service throughout Europe. “More than ever, we’re seeing the power of our freemium model, with the vast majority of subscribers upgrading after having first used the free service, and the ratio of paying subscribers to active free users now 15%” said CEO Daniel Ek. Spotify also said that paid subscribers are growing at twice the rate of free users. Spotify registered its ten millionth user last September, but these aren’t all active members. Spotify’s recent push to focus on premium users likely means that labels and partners — both in Europe and the US — care much more about the percent of users who are active or paying monthly.
